In December 2009, the Sacramento Area Sewer District (SASD) and Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (SRCSD) relocated from three prior worksites to a new "green" facility at 10060 Goethe Road, Sacramento, CA 95827. The consolidation helps us serve our customers and conduct our business operations efficiently. The facility features 130,000 square feet of office space; a corporation yard housing maintenance and operations staff and equipment, and a 40,000 square foot warehouse.
Proud to Go "Green"
The Districts provide a vital function essential to environmental protection, so development of a sustainable and eco-friendly facility was a major consideration when planning the Goethe Road facility. Other key factors were sensitivity to life-cycle costs, employee comfort and productivity. The Districts' efforts to be "green" spanned the initial site selection and construction, as well as addressing stormwater management, the heat island effect and alternative transportation. In December 2010, the Districts achieved a LEED Gold Certification for its facility from the U.S. Green Building Council.
Sustainability Features
The building was designed by Sacramento area-based Williams+Paddon Architects, and features numerous sustainable building qualities, including:
- Water efficient landscaping that reduces the potable water consumption for irrigation by 50%.
- Fixtures that promote water use reduction such as low flow urinals, faucets and showers.
- 100 KW photovoltaics on the warehouse roof that help the building use 28% less energy than California's energy code (Title 24); 35% of electricity comes from renewable sources.
- Thermal comfort components such as an under-floor air distribution contribute to improved indoor air quality, and exterior sunshades, window shades and louvered skylights help control radiant heat.
- Recycled content was used in 22% of materials including steel, carpet, concrete and insulation.
- Regional materials made up over 10% of materials, coming from within 500 miles of the project site.
- The building utilizes an abundance of skylights and low modular work stations, and more than 75% of work spaces receive daylight.
LEED Buildings & LEED Certification
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System® is the national benchmark for the design, construction, and operations of high-performing buildings that minimize their environmental impact. LEED was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by evaluating buildings in six categories: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation and design.

Project Awards
In addition to achieving LEED Gold Certification, SASD has won awards for its Office Building & Corporation Yard.
American Institute of Architects - Merit Design Award
In May 2011, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) awarded SASD's Office Building & Corporation Yard - and architectural firm Williams + Paddon Architects + Planners Inc. - with a Merit Design Award. AIA judges specifically noted the building's interior skylights which allow for the second floor to be almost entirely illuminated by natural light. The judges also highlighted the facility’s warehouse storage, functional work space and public art features.
Business Environmental Resource Center of Sacramento
Annual Sustainable Business Award
In 2010, the Business Environmental Resource Center of Sacramento (BERC) named SASD a winner of its Annual Sustainable Business award. SASD received a Certificate of Achievement from the Sacramento Sustainable Business Program for the Office Building & Corporation Yard. BERC noted that SASD had successfully demonstrated a commitment to environmentally friendly practices and took voluntary action to conserve resources.
Art in Public Places Program
As part of the Art in Public Places Program, the site features work by artist Gordon Huether. A suspended sculpture is featured in the lobby, art tiles are placed in the lobby floor and other areas, and a glass sculpture is displayed in the courtyard.
