DESCRIPTION:Open Trail Day is a great opportunity to explore the Bufferlands. We will have 7 miles of trails open for you to walk at your own pace. Our biologists and docents will be out on the trails to help you find your way and to answer any nature-related questions. The trails go through oak forests with trees over 300 years old\, willow and cottonwood riparian forests\, restored forests\, grasslands\, and seasonal wetlands. Many species of songbirds and waterbirds can be seen this time of year. \nThis free event will begin at 7:00 a.m. and close at 3:00 p.m. Please sign in at the check-in table and get your trail map. Dress for the weather and bring a water bottle. DESCRIPTION:Due to popular demand\, we have changed this event to an open trail date. \nThis is a great time of the year to see a wide variety of plants in bloom\, including wetland and vernal pool species. Birds are at their most conspicuous\, with lingering winter species\, singing nesters\, and migrants on their way north. \nYou do not need to sign up in advance for this event and can visit any time during the open hours\, though we will be closing up at 1 pm. There will be about 4 miles of open trails. \nIMPORTANT: This will be on the eastern side of the property and some of the locations are very rarely accessed on public tours. See directions below. \nTrails are a mix of gravel and dirt roads\, plus mowed paths around seasonal wetlands with stretches of uneven ground\, though the area is generally flat. There are some shady areas\, but much of it is pretty open\, so the morning will be the most enjoyable. \nStaff and docents will be on hand to answer questions and assist with logistics. \nAside from a portable toilet\, there will be no services\, so plan to bring the water and food you need. If you have binoculars\, they will help with wildlife viewing. \nNo Pets\, Please! For all Bufferlands events\, we respectfully request that you please leave your dogs and other pets at home. \n  \nDIRECTIONS: \n Because of roadwork\, you will only be able to turn onto Sims Rd if coming from the north. \n  \nFrom Interstate-5 \nTake I-5 south from Sacramento\, exit at Cosumnes River Blvd. Drive East to Franklin Blvd. Drive south on Franklin approx 1.7 miles\, and turn right onto Sims Rd (landscaped entrance with no traffic light). \nIn 300 yards\, turn right at the sign and follow the signs to the parking area. The road will be a mowed service path\, but negotiable by all vehicles–drive slowly for a safe and smooth ride. \n  \nFrom Highway-99 \nTake Hwy-99 south from Sacramento\, exit at Cosumnes River Blvd. Drive west to Franklin Blvd. Drive south on Franklin approx 1.7  miles\, and turn right onto Sims Rd (landscaped entrance with no traffic light). \nIn 300 yards\, turn right at the sign and follow the signs to the parking area. The road will be a mowed service path\, but negotiable by all vehicles–drive slowly for a safe and smooth ride. \n  \nOr\, if you will be going north on Franklin Blvd from Laguna \nYou will have to pass Sims Rd (unless the roadwork is completed early) in order to make a U-turn at Franklin and Calvine\, 1.75 miles north of Laguna Blvd (the light just north of Laguna Creek). You then proceed south approx 0.7 mile and turn right onto Sims Rd (landscaped entrance with no traffic light). \nIn 300 yards\, turn right at the sign and follow the signs to the parking area. DESCRIPTION:EVENT REGISTRATION IS FULL. \nJoin us for a walk of up to 1.5 miles to look for the three regular owl species found on the Bufferlands. We hope to have locations staked out to see Barn Owls and Burrowing Owls\, and we hope to find a viewable\, early Great Horned Owl nest.  We’ll stay out until sunset and watch for what can be the dynamic movement of birds and other wildlife as they prepare for nightfall. \nPortions of the walk may be in areas that are wet and muddy\, and we will provide those registered with updated site conditions. \nAdvanced registration is required for this free event as space is limited.
